BigKarma’s music journey began alongside her siblings, a shared passion that was always present in her life. However, it wasn’t until the heartbreaking loss of her grandmother that she turned to music as a way to cope. Unable to express the depth of her grief, BigKarma began writing poetry, which soon evolved into the powerful lyrics she is known for today. In her own words, “I didn’t know how to cope, so I began to write poetry and turned them lyrically.” Music became her solace, and poetry became her voice.
Through the ups and downs of life, BigKarma’s kids became her biggest source of motivation. Realizing that she had honed her craft to a level of mastery, she saw music as not just a passion but a way to build a future for her family. “Once I realized this was a craft I mastered, I knew I had found our way out,” she reflects, describing the deep sense of purpose that keeps her going.
BigKarma grew up listening to strong female artists like Latto, Lakeyah, and Ann Marie, all of whom continue to inspire her. Their influence, combined with her unique style, helped shape her into the artist she is today. “I love listening to them growing up and still do,” she says, showing how these trailblazers have paved the way for her distinctive sound in hip-hop and rap.
Her writing process is deeply personal and cathartic. Whether celebrating moments of joy or dealing with overwhelming sadness, BigKarma turns to music as her outlet. “Every time I had something good happen where I was so excited, or something so bad, I’d be up at night crying alone, and I would just begin to write and feel the beat throughout my body,” she says. It’s through these intense emotions that she creates music, pouring her heart and soul into every track.
When asked to describe her style, BigKarma is confident and unapologetic: “My style is unmatched. I’m one of one. No one can compare.” Her music reflects a wide range of emotions and vibes, making her catalog versatile enough to fit any mood. If someone is new to her sound, she would simply ask, “What mood are you in?” and from there, help them choose a song that resonates.
For BigKarma, it’s all about balance—her name says it all. “With that being said, it’s Karma now. Good or bad, it’s up to you which version you receive.” This duality is a central theme in her music, giving listeners both the highs and lows, just as life does. She’s an artist who channels her experiences into every track, and her raw authenticity is what sets her apart in the ever-evolving world of hip-hop.
