Since I can remember I knew that I wanted to make music and perform. As a kid, I used to perform as a dancer and the feeling I had on the stage was always something I looked forward to. When I was around 10, songwriting sort of came naturally and I found myself making up songs about pretty much anything in my life.
My top 3 musical influences would have to be Rihanna, Jhené Aiko and Tyla. They inspire me so much as artists and performers.
When I was 19, I entered a songwriting workshop called The Songwriting Week where I came closer to the process of making music professionally. It made me decide not to go to college and pursue music full time. I gained connections, collaborations and opportunities through the project that started launching my music career.
I work in the studio every day now and my process usually starts with a melody and a rhythm, then I add lyrics and I just let them take me wherever. I don’t like deciding on a song topic prior to writing because it’s more fun to just see what comes out naturally.
I’m always open to collaborating with new artists because I feel like I can expand the way I’m used to creating and I can try something new with each person.
The stories of my songs are rarely from my personal life. I prefer coming up with a story and its characters, and then writing from a POV of one of them.
I think my highlight moment is the release of my first collaboration album Znakovi. It was my biggest project yet and I learned a lot while creating it.
My music is still pretty versatile, sometimes I worry that I need to narrow it down into a single genre, but I just don’t think I’m that kind of artist. I like pop, hip hop, r&b, dancehall, afro pop, and even electronic pop so I’d say that my love for all of them can be heard in different songs of mine.
I haven’t been on tour yet, but I’m very excited for that experience one day!
I think my biggest challenge in the music industry is learning how to remain focused and dedicated on your own work without getting influenced by what others are doing. With social media, it’s easy to see how something is working out for someone else and compare it to your situation. But I think it’s vital to keep going even when we’re not yet seeing the results we want.
I’m open to criticism when it’s clearly good-intentioned. I’ve learned to recognize when people just want to tear you down, so when I feel that a person is coming from that place, I just remind myself of my vision and what I believe in.
I’ve learned that it’s really important to believe in what you do because no one will believe in something that you don’t believe in with your whole heart.
What I’m preparing next is a couple more singles in Croatian, but then I intend to turn to a more international audience by releasing music in English again. I have many songs in the works so I’m super excited to get them out there!
I think I’m still exploring my sound, but I see myself always having a mixture of genres in my music. I think that’s going to be a part of what I put out in the future as well.
