Nashville singer-songwriter Heather Mae has released two albums: WHAT THEY HID FROM ME and kissing girls. While kissing girls leans into pop territory, WHAT THEY HID FROM ME is more alternative with elements of rock, folk, indie and more. The album is deeply powerful and a must listen to survival story. WHAT THEY HID FROM ME is the best work from the artist to date, as she shares 10 songs equally important in their own right.
The album opens up with indie rock single “All’s Not Lost”. The track details Mae’s journey dealing with depression. The song though is hopeful and uplifting showing others they are not alone and that there can be healing. Echoing gritty electric guitar riffs entice as does Heather’s confident yet soulful vocals. Steady drum beats and an empowering chorus add the best song of the album. Then there is “Ash & Smoke”, a smoldering alternative embrace filled with seductive vocals, moody backdrops and enticing rhythms. The track “Kissing Girls”, is a folk lullaby all about Mae’s own coming out story. The poignant song “What I Know Now” details a sexual assault and how horrible and common that can be.
Heather Mae shares, “WHAT THEY HID FROM ME is for the part of me that was silenced, erased, made to feel unworthy—the part that had to unlearn shame before it could reclaim power.” Her album is triumphant, brave, and enduring and a must hear musical piece.
