Mouth Water Talks New Song, Upcoming Album, and More

With his single, “Smoke,” out now, we took some time to hear from Mouth Water. Read below
to learn more about Mouth Water, the story behind his latest single, and what’s to come.

Hi Mouth Water! Let’s start with how did you get your artist name?

It’s a literal translation of an Italian expression which means: don’t tell, because initially I was shy and didn’t want to put my face on the project.

What city are you from and where are you based now?

I was born in Florence, Italy and still live here, but have lived in the US as well because I’m half American. So, I sort of have a second home in the town of Lakeland, Florida.

At what point in your life did you decide to pursue a career in music? How did you get started?

After I graduated university, where I studied business and economics, I decided that I needed to do what I love, so I enrolled in a sound engineering course in London. From there, I had all sorts of sound related jobs and projects. I was actually determined to be a sound engineer until I played my old songs to a friend who convinced me to go back into making my own music.

Has your upbringing played a role in shaping who you are and defining your sound today? If so, how?

Well, on top of all the British and American music everyone listens to, I’ve been exposed to a lot of Italian music as well and even played the clarinet in an orchestra as a teen. So, I incorporate a little bit of that in my music.

How would you describe your sound to readers who may not be familiar with you?

It’s mostly electronic pop, with both synthesizers and acoustic instruments. Sometimes the beat is danceable, sometimes it’s more chilled like in ‘Smoke.’

Do you have any hobbies outside of music? What do you do to stay creative?

I like sports where I’m surrounded by nature, like mountain biking, skiing, kite surfing, and I also love traveling. My goal is to visit at least one new country every year.

Who are some of your main musical influences?

I draw inspiration from pretty much anything that I’ve listened to. In the electronic realm, I’m a huge fan of the French touch sound, right now there is an artist I really like called French 79 who is influencing me. But, anything in any other genre is fair game as well, mostly jazz, classic rock and ’80s synthpop.

What are some of your future music career goals?

My goal is to play more festivals and possibly bigger and bigger stages as a headliner. Also, writing or producing a global hit wouldn’t be half bad.

What’s one of the proudest moments of your music career so far?

Last year, I played Primavera Sound in Barcelona and it was a great experience even though I was playing on one of the smaller stages. Also having my track, ‘For So Long,’ remixed by an artist of the caliber of Rhye was pretty amazing.

What would you say are the greatest lessons that you’ve learned so far?

Never give up, keep learning and improving in all areas, not just music and don’t listen to anyone’s advice when you know that you’re right.

Now onto your release, ‘Smoke.’ What inspired this song?

Musically, it’s influenced by ‘80s synthpop and some ‘90s music too. I recently realized one of the melodies is actually a variation of a popular punk rock tune from 1999.

What is ‘Smoke’ about?

Lyrically, the song is a bit of a ghost story about a person that I used to know a few years ago who was trying to leave her past behind, but never succeeded due to the digital trail we all leave. She eventually vanished like smoke.

What is your favorite lyric in ‘Smoke’ and why?

You do the things that you like, you eat your breakfast at night, you’re not afraid to be right… because it truly represents the character of that person.

What message do you hope fans take away from your music and from ‘Smoke?’

I’m hoping to take the listener on a journey to escape from reality, by telling this story which is actually pretty open to interpretation.

What’s next for you? Are you working on any upcoming projects, or do you have any upcoming shows that we should be on the lookout for?

I have two shows booked right now, on on May 17th at the Viper Theater and June 9th at Ultravox in Florence, Italy. Hoping to get more shows in the summer, and I’ll also be releasing three more singles between June and September before my album, Technology Fueled Dream obsolescence, drops in the fall.
