Killa D – Magazine Interview

How did your journey in music begin?

Answer: My music journey began when I was 12 years old walking around with a karaoke machine, and a microphone while rapping different songs.

Who were your earliest musical influences?

Answer: My earliest musical influences were definitely Tupac, I loved the way he was just able to be himself and express himself as far as music, acting, art school and etc. My Other Influences were Lil Wayne, Fabulous, UGK, Styles P, Jadakiss, Boosie, Webbie, and Others.

When did you realize music was something you wanted to pursue seriously?

Answer: I realized that I wanted to pursue it seriously once I moved to Houston in 2009, I linked with a great friend of mines (Jorge The Promoter) – R. I. P. Then, linked up with International O and my God Bro (B. E. Z. Tha Belief)

Once I started getting out on the scene, to going to every car show with Jorge, to sxsw every year with International O, and then signing with B. E. Z. (G. I. G. / GSOC) back in 2014! I tend to get my name out & heard every where through out Houston and other markets!

What’s the story behind your stage name (if you have one)?

Answer: The story behind my name honestly is my nickname (D. K. ) which lead up to being Killa D from being so versatile with my writing style.

🎵 Creative Process

What inspires your songwriting or music production?

Answer: What inspires me is when I can take things that people are going through, whether it is me personally or someone else who I see going through it and make an impact by telling a story about whatever situation it may be.

Can you walk us through your creative process?

Answer: My creative process involves (depending upon the situation) I can come with hooks in my head without any beat, and when I do shop around for beats, I match the best possible hook to the beat. After that’s done, I go record it and send it to a few djs, even friends to get true feedback (no yes men).

Tell us about your latest project/song/album?

Answer: My latest song called “POP IT!” Feat Louisiana Cash & 9th Ward Judy Released in 2020 , I was sitting on that hook for 10 years because I couldn’t find the right tempo beat to go along with it. I still till this day push the same song. I also have two albums entitled “Small City Big Dreams!” Based on me coming from a small city in north Louisiana called “Minden” and moving to “Houston” which made me title them.

What’s the message or vibe?

Answer: My message that I wanted to put out was, no matter where you live or come from. You can accomplish anything you put your mind to!

What was the most challenging part of making this project?

Answer: The most challenging parts of this project was how I wanted my track list to be, I didn’t want people to be bored, then turnt up, so I had to put different type of vibes so that my fans can hear my versatility and story telling.

Is there a particular track that means the most to you—and why?

Answer: There are three tracks that means a lot to me, my first one would be “Ventilation” (R. I. P. Ree Ree) which was based on a true story & events that went on in my life of losing my best friend to domestic violence in 2016.

My second one is “Remember The Days” (Ft. Dj Malone) based on how I was treated from Jr high to High school, being that nerd, bullied, picked on, no girls liking me…

My third one: “Motivation Talk!” which is based on when you feel like you’re so so close to whatever goal/dream you may have, they’ll always be the nah saying, doubters, non believers, whether it’s friends, family, girlfriend, boyfriend, whoever…. You just have to continue to MOTIVATE yourself, keep God first no matter what comes your way!
