Chris J’s love for music has been lifelong — but his journey began around the age of 12 or 13, when he started crafting beats on his phone using GarageBand. What started as playful experimentation soon turned into a passion.
“I realized it was something I wanted to pursue seriously when I recorded for the first time,” Chris recalls.
“It was a remix of Craig Mack’s Flava in Ya Ear — from there, I was locked in.”
As someone who always enjoyed writing and creating, seeing the music come to life in real time sparked something in him — a hunger to learn, evolve, and flourish in this space.
The Name & Identity
His stage name, Chris J, is a simple shortening of his real name — understated but personal. While he’s occasionally considered changing it, it speaks to the honesty and grounded nature that runs through all of his work.
Inspiration & Process
For Chris, inspiration doesn’t come from one place — it comes from life.
“What inspires my songwriting and production most is the people around me — and the day-to-day highs and lows of living.”
Of course, music, TV, and film influence his taste, but nothing fuels originality like real life and a nuanced perspective. His creative process is as fluid as the emotions that shape it — driven by instinct, experimentation, and a willingness to try new things.
“It’s really just throwing stuff at the wall and seeing what sticks. You feel different every day, so I try to stay open to whatever the moment calls for.”
The Latest Release: reminded
Chris J’s latest song, “reminded,” marks a turning point — both artistically and personally. The calm, folk-inspired alt track features Chris singing over a looped guitar and bass sample he dug out from an old record — something intimate, short, and deeply sincere.
“I wrote it on a sleepless night a few years ago, just looping the chop I made… and I’ve been holding onto it ever since.”
Though he’s sung his whole life, this track is the first time he’s released music with his vocals front and center. That choice alone makes “reminded” a milestone — a soft but powerful introduction to a different side of who he is.
“I’ve been learning a lot about love, vulnerability, and letting go lately… so releasing this feels like part of that journey.”
