Interview with Matthew Von Der Ahe

Q: What’s the title of your newest movie?
I actually have two movies coming out next year. The first one is Wish Watch, and I’m fortunate to have been cast as one of the lead actors in the film. It was a lot of work, but I loved the experience from start to finish. The cast and crew were incredible, and we became like a family during filming.

The second movie is called One Perfect Date. It’s a coming-of-age story that follows a woman with Down syndrome as she navigates work and love. It’s a beautiful and uplifting story, and I’m really proud to be part of it and to get to work with my former Champions cast-mate, Madison Tevlin, who stars in it.

Q: What can you tell us about it?
Wish Watch is a story follows two best friends who get caught in a time loop and have to figure out how to move forward while navigating all the ups and downs of friendship. It’s funny and heartfelt, but also has some real-life lessons about loyalty, forgiveness, and second chances.

Q: How would you describe your character?
My character is carefree and go-lucky, the kind of guy who tries to find the bright side in everything. But there’s also a lot of depth to him.

Creative Process

Q: What was the process for getting into character?
I had to figure out what the character and I had in common and then I had to find where I fit in and what parts of myself, I wanted the character to have.

Q: Was there a moment during filming when you knew this was special?
Definitely. Even though it’s a comedy, there’s a strong message at the heart of it. The first time we filmed one of the emotional scenes between the two friends, I could feel that we were making something meaningful. That’s when I knew Wish Watch was going to be special.

Artistic Vision

Q: What message or emotion do you hope viewers take away from this role?
I hope people see the value in friendship, the kind that helps you grow and makes you a better person. We’re all shaped by the people around us, and that’s definitely true for these two characters. I think the audience will all be able to relate.

Q: How does this role reflect your growth as an artist?
This project challenged me in new ways. We filmed long days in the Arizona heat, and some days it was hard to stay motivated, especially when I was tired or uncomfortable. But I kept reminding myself that I only had this short time to bring my character to life, and that kept me going. But there were way more days that were pure fun and reminded me why I love acting so much.

Q: Were there any unique elements you experimented with for this role?
Yes, I had to tap into some real emotions in this one. Some of the scenes required me to be more vulnerable than I’d ever been before. I worked really hard on that skill;  it challenged me as an actor in the best way.

Personal Connection

Q: Does this role reflect something personal from your life?
It does. Friendship, even the closest kind, can be complicated. I’ve experienced that in my own life. Sometimes we hurt the people we care about the most without meaning to, but real friends find their way back to each other. I think that’s something everyone can relate to.

Q: Were there any challenges or breakthroughs during filming?
We filmed in Arizona during the summer, and it was hot! I have Graves’ disease, which is an autoimmune condition that makes me heat sensitive. My character wore wool in a lot of scenes, so there were some tough days physically. But the crew was really supportive, and I learned how to push through and stay focused.

Looking Ahead

Q: What’s next for you after this?
I’m continuing to audition and doing more writing, which is a big passion of mine. I keep a busy schedule with dance, music, and my stationery art company that I started a couple of years ago. I like to stay creative in different ways.

Q: What do you hope this project does for your career?
I hope Wish Watch helps people see what I can do as an actor. I also hope it opens doors for my writing to be recognized — one day, I’d love to see one of my own stories come to life on screen.

Fun & Personality

Q: What’s currently on your playlist?
I love all kinds of music, but lately I’ve been listening to The Beatles. Their songs never get old, and they always put me in a good mood.

Q: What’s one thing fans would be surprised to learn about you?
People might be surprised to know that I’m color blind, but I still love doing art! I think it makes my perspective a little different, and that’s part of what makes my work unique.
