California-based musical genius Beau James Wilding has created a new mesmerizing musical project called Food for the Wyrm. The folk rock with a hint of metal artist has just shared his latest album ‘A Wicked Huntsman’. The full length is composed of eight tracks with six core tracks represented by six flowers native to the Irish countryside, each in turn representing six traumatic life experiences– betrayal, loss, shame, cruelty, addiction and ignorance.
The album begins with “Nigrido”, a dark hym with shadowy instrumentation ushering in what is to come. “The Lowlands of Holland” is an enticing and seductive re-imagination of the original 17th century Scottish ballad about a new wife who looses her husband out to sea. Food for the Wyrm’s spin is unique with pitch black vocals singing fervently against invigorating acoustic guitars and moody electric guitar layerings.
With “Nobody’s Fault But Mine”, Food for the Wyrm is at his strongest, creating an instrumental oasis filled with intoxicating guitar riffs and fiery vocals. Harrowing sonics that draw the listener in echo a lesson of responsibility. While “Unfortunate Rake” tells the tale of a self destructive young man whose hedonism is out of control. Food for the Wrym’s vocals are intense, passionate and gravely a perfect voice for the song’s meaning. “Lovers and Friends” is another highlight with sing-a-long worthy melodies and stacked traditional folk instruments.
‘A Wicked Huntsman’ is an album unlike anything I have heard before. It is an experience and is meant to be played loud. Food for the Wyrm succeeds in creating a one-of-a-kind listen.
