For Borough Bags

You can take the girl out of East New York, but you can’t take East New York out of the girl. Just ask Kassandra, the creator and founder of Borough Bags — the NYC-inspired fashion brand turning subway lines, neighborhood pride, and that unmistakable city swagger into pieces you can actually carry.

“Borough Bags is really a piece of New York you can take with you.”

We sat down with Kassandra to talk risk, internet trolls, messy middle drafts, and why betting her last check on herself was the scariest — and smartest — move she’s ever made.

From Caretaker to Creator

Kassandra isn’t new to responsibility. Before Borough Bags, she worked through PPL caring for her grandparents: her grandfather, recovering from a stroke and living with dementia, and her grandmother, battling serious bone problems. But even while clocking in for someone else, she knew the 9-to-5 wasn’t the endgame.

“I never really liked the idea of spending my whole life working for someone else,” she says. “For me, entrepreneurship isn’t just about making money. It’s about building generational wealth. Creating something my family can benefit from long after me.”

Growing up in East New York showed her exactly why that mattered. “I’ve seen how important opportunity and representation can be. I want people who come from neighborhoods like mine to see that we can create our own opportunities. We can build something bigger than where we started.”

That mindset became Borough Bags: a brand rooted in the familiar — the train stops, the slang, the corner-store energy — reimagined as bags and gear that let New Yorkers wear their city with pride

The Bet That Changed Everything

Every founder has a moment where the vision gets real. For Kassandra, it came right after losing her job.

“I had bills. I had people depending on me. I had real life happening around me,” she says. “But instead of playing it safe, I took my last check and put it into Borough Bags. I didn’t even pay my bills first.”

No safety net. No guarantee. Just a gut feeling that it was now or never.

“It was scary because there was absolutely no guarantee that I would make that money back. But I felt like, if I was ever going to bet on myself, this was the moment.”

That risk reframed everything. Borough Bags wasn’t a hobby anymore. It was hers.

Turning Hate Comments Into Fuel

The internet didn’t exactly roll out the red carpet. When Kassandra first posted Borough Bags, the trolls came fast. “People left hate comments saying nobody was going to buy the bags. They laughed at the idea.”

Watching strangers mock something you built from scratch stings. But Kassandra refused to let comment-section cynics write her story.

“I had to remind myself that people will criticize things they don’t understand, especially when they haven’t seen the vision come together yet,” she says. “If anything, the hate pushed me harder. I wanted to prove to myself that I could take an idea people laughed at and turn it into something people actually wanted.”

She kept posting. And then it happened.

The Viral Flip

Batch two went up — and went viral again. But this time, the comments hit different.

“People were asking where they could buy them, complimenting the designs, sharing their favorites,” Kassandra recalls. “That was a big moment because it showed me that the first wave of negativity didn’t define Borough Bags.”

Suddenly, the demand was real. The DMs weren’t doubts; they were orders. “After having people tell me nobody would buy my bags, seeing people turn around and ask me, ‘Where can I get one?’ meant something different.”

That was the moment Borough Bags stopped being a side project and became a business.

The Messy Middle: Where Borough Bags Get Made

If you think a Borough Bag design comes out perfect on draft one, think again. Kassandra’s process is all iteration.

“A design can go through a lot of changes before I feel like it’s really ready,” she says. “I might change the colors, layout, train stops, wording, placement, or sometimes remove something completely.”

And yes, she reads the comments. “I take creative criticism seriously. Sometimes the people supporting your brand can see something you missed.”

But listening doesn’t mean losing the plot. “At the end of the day, I still make the final creative decisions because I know what I want Borough Bags to represent. Changing something doesn’t mean the first idea was wrong. Sometimes it just means the vision is still growing.”

On Burnout, Balance, and Building a World

Running every part of the brand — designs, products, orders, promos, customer DMs — means burnout is real.

“Creative burnout for me happens when I have so many ideas and responsibilities going on at once that suddenly, I don’t want to create anything,” Kassandra says.

Her reset? Step away. “Sometimes I need to do something completely unrelated to Borough Bags. I’m learning that resting is part of the creative process too. Usually, my creativity comes back when I stop chasing it.”

That balance shows up in how she handles customer feedback, too. “I definitely pay attention to what people respond to, but I don’t want the customers designing the entire brand for me.” If you keep asking for a certain train line or colorway, she’s listening. But the final call still runs through her vision.

“The goal is to give people what they want without losing what makes Borough Bags recognizable as Borough Bags.”

What’s Next: The Borough Bags Universe

Ask Kassandra what she’s obsessed with making right now and she won’t say “bags.” She’ll say “world-building.”

“Right now, I’m obsessed with expanding the whole Borough Bags world beyond just bags,” she says. “Shirts, backpacks, wallets, accessories, rolling papers — other products that still feel connected to New York culture.”

Not every sketch becomes a SKU, and that’s the point. “Not everything has to become a product, and not every idea has to make money. Sometimes I just need the freedom to create and see where the idea takes me.”

Because that’s how Borough Bags started: one idea, a lot of nerve, and a last check.

“And look where that idea is taking me now.”
