Shanay J is a vocalist whose journey is rooted in faith, resilience, and a lifelong relationship with music. Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, and raised in Columbus, Georgia, her story began at just five years old. Her mother, a church choir singer, heard her singing Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” in the basement one day and immediately recognized something special. From that moment forward, Shanay was enrolled in choir and remained deeply involved in competitive choirs throughout her school years. Music was never just an activity — it was part of her foundation.
As she grew, so did her creative expression. In high school, Shanay began writing poetry as a way to process emotions and explore storytelling. It didn’t take long for her to realize she could transform those poems into songs. She would play instrumentals from CDs she purchased as a teen and sing her original words over them. The first instrumental she ever used was “Jumpin’ Jumpin’” by Destiny’s Child — a playful but pivotal moment that marked the beginning of her songwriting journey.
Her influences reflect both timeless soul and modern R&B. Growing up, she immersed herself in the sounds of Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Chaka Khan, Sade, and Luther Vandross — vocalists known for their power, tone, and emotional depth. As she entered high school, her playlist expanded to include Kelly Price, Brandy, Destiny’s Child, and Usher. What drew her to these artists was their uniqueness. Shanay has always had a distinctive tone — one that didn’t mirror those around her. For a while, that felt isolating. There weren’t many people who sounded like her. Over time, she realized that what once felt different was actually her superpower. Embracing her tone required growth and confidence, but today she owns it fully.
Before stepping completely into music professionally, Shanay was working in healthcare. After being laid off, she applied for positions she was overqualified for, yet nothing materialized. During that uncertain season, she watched the documentary 20 Feet from Stardom. She often says that was the moment God revealed her path — even if she didn’t recognize it immediately. Just one week later, she received a call to audition for a tour. She got the gig, and with her mother’s encouragement, she took the leap. She has been singing professionally ever since.

Shanay has had the honor of performing behind some of the greatest voices in music, many within the rock genre. Her church upbringing made the transition seamless. Gospel taught her stamina and control; jazz shaped her phrasing and musicality; rock expanded her range and edge. Blending those influences allowed her voice to evolve into something uniquely her own. She continues to grow, learning daily who she is as both a singer and an artist.
One of her proudest accomplishments isn’t tied to a specific stage or accolade — it’s the healing she has experienced through her music journey. She is proud of remaining a student in every room she enters. Though she has performed on some of the world’s biggest stages alongside legendary artists, what humbles her most is knowing she has only scratched the surface of her potential. That awareness keeps her grounded and hungry.
The loss of her father at a young age deeply fuels her drive. He never had the opportunity to witness her achievements, but she carries him with her in every performance, striving to make him proud. Her mother, meanwhile, instilled in her a powerful relationship with God — one that anchors her daily. Faith guides her decisions and keeps her centered. She considers herself blessed to have been raised by parents who taught her to navigate life with love, peace, and unwavering belief.
Today, Shanay continues touring with the Alabama Shakes while also building her own creative lane. She is creating music with her band PS Music, alongside pianist and producer Paul “NoStress” Horton. Together, they have released two singles and are preparing to drop a full project soon. Beyond her own releases, Shanay remains active in the studio, helping other artists bring their visions to life. Collaboration excites her, and she looks forward to working with as many creatives as possible.
Guided by Psalms 46:5, Shanay J walks forward in purpose, faith, and expectation. She is ready for what’s next — even the blessings she can’t yet imagine.
