Calvin Kai: The Independent Artist Mapping the Human Pursuit of Alignment
Michigan-born storyteller Calvin Kai transforms a single fan request into a 16-track exploration of love, fate, and the eras that shape us.
From the outset, Calvin Kai defines himself not by title, but by craft. “I’m originally from Michigan and I would describe myself as a full-time music lover and natural born storyteller,” he tells Hello!. “I’ve always been hyper fixated on stories and storytelling — whether through fanfiction, novels, or songs.”
That fixation has culminated in a new album: 16 tracks Kai describes as “an examination of every facet of the human need of chasing the aligning stars, across different eras of music and human history.” The deluxe edition, he notes, offers “an even more complete picture of that driven human need.”
A Narrative Arc in 16 Songs
Though he never attended college, Kai frames the record as a conceptual study. “The core message is about the intricacies behind relationships,” he explains. Each song charts a different trajectory toward alignment. In “Now, Not Yesterday,” fulfillment arrives only after a protracted journey. “Every Second Loving You” depicts a path that unfolds with unexpected ease. “Come Home” addresses the work of sustaining connection once it’s found, while “Unfinished Piano” explores how external voices can fracture what was once whole.
Sequencing was deliberate. “Stars Will Align opens the record with a sense of hopefulness,” Kai says. “Now, Not Yesterday closes it with finality — the story resolved favorably.” Between them, he traverses four decades of sound. “It was important to replicate textures and narratives that would resonate with the 1970s through the 1990s, and into today.”

From Commission to Concept Album
The project began without intention. “I didn’t have any ideas for an album at all,” Kai admits. While working on Back to You, he wrote purely for personal expression. The shift came when a fan commissioned a song for a project and shared a script for context.
“That is how I’m Not Leaving and Stars Will Align were born,” he recalls. The former became an early draft of the latter. “The moment I heard the finished Stars Will Align, I knew it was the theme for an entire album. I wanted to explore the many ways the stars can align for people — and the struggle to get there.”
The final track written, “Kings and Queens,” crystallized the album’s purpose. “It speaks to our daily striving to find our place in the world, and our person. In that process, we have to break free from societal constraints to find our place in the stars. Many of us have forgotten how to do that, or have become stuck. I wanted to remind listeners that we are all capable of standing in our rightful place.
Intentionality and Influence
Kai’s process is meticulous. “I am very intentional with lyrics, track sequencing, and my social media presence,” he says. He credits a long-standing admiration for Taylor Swift with sharpening that instinct. “Taylor trained me to see patterns and connect the dots. I notice the number 13 frequently — it appears in my work often. The Borrowed Fire music video I just completed runs six minutes and thirteen seconds. That wasn’t planned.”
The Reality of Independence
Despite the scope of the project, Kai operates without traditional industry support. “The next thing that scares me is waiting to see how the album performs. I have no team backing me. I am the entire promotional department, aside from two fan-run accounts, Calvinkaimexico and CalvinKaifans.”
The work is demanding. “Some days I feel like I’m pushing a boulder up a cliff. It is exhausting, but worth it to see how many lives have been touched by the music.”
That independence extends to skill-building. “I need to learn social media more effectively. I see other accounts outperforming mine, and it’s challenging to identify how to improve my content when I lack that expertise in my immediate circle. My autism means I struggle to learn concepts I haven’t been taught hands-on, but I need to figure it out so the music and its audience benefit long term.”

Technology, Collaboration, and Looking Ahead
Kai has integrated AI into his creative process and views criticism of it as a matter of misunderstanding. “I don’t see much changing in the world, aside from people who criticize it without understanding how it functions creatively.”
When asked about future collaborators, he remains focused on the present. “I haven’t given much thought to who might become part of my journey. I’ve been very focused on the here and now.”
His five-year outlook is one of gratitude to his current self. “I would like to thank myself for starting my first social media accounts and staying consistent, even when it felt impossible. That is what I want to remember five years on.”
