Darrell Kelley has spent much of his career moving comfortably between musical styles and subject matter, and his latest single, “Girl I Seen,” finds the singer and songwriter testing the waters of Top 40 radio.
Released July 31 through Viral Records, the track recently reached No. 99 on the Mediabase 7 Day Activator Chart in the Top 40 format for the week ending August 29. It is a modest chart debut, certainly, but also a notable milestone for an independent artist working to expand his presence beyond an established audience.
“Girl I Seen” arrives as another entry in Kelley’s steadily growing catalog, but this time the emphasis is less on making a grand statement and more on creating an accessible song that can live comfortably alongside contemporary pop and R&B releases. Kelley has frequently used his music to address themes of inspiration, unity and social concern, so a track built around more personal expression offers a change of scenery.
There is also a distinctly 2026 element to the release: an AI-generated music video accompanying the single on Kelley’s YouTube channel. AI visuals have rapidly become part of the independent-music landscape, allowing artists to create ambitious-looking videos without the logistics of a conventional production. Whether audiences view that as an exciting creative tool or simply another digital novelty, it gives “Girl I Seen” an additional visual identity.
For Kelley, the most interesting part of the release may ultimately be what happens next. A No. 99 showing does not make “Girl I Seen” a Top 40 hit just yet, but getting onto the Mediabase Activator chart gives the song a foothold in that world.
For now, “Girl I Seen” feels like Kelley opening another door—one leading away from some of the heavier themes associated with his work and toward something a little lighter, more personal and perhaps more radio-friendly. Sometimes a change of pace is enough to make listeners look twice.
